Tevau feather coin, Santa Cruz province, Solomon Islands. Th - Lot 358
Tevau feather coin, Santa Cruz province, Solomon Islands. The coin is presented in the form of a double roll of hibiscus fibers on which are fixed plates covered with the red feathers of the honey-eating bird (Myzomela cardinalis). The center is decorated with a spartan fish motif and shell pendants. Our example, in used condition, bears witness to one of the Pacific's most astonishing exchange traditions: until the 1920s, tevau money was used to acquire a wife or a valuable possession.
