UKRAINE. Anatolij Rafailovic BRUSILOVSKIJ (b. 1932) The Japa - Lot 104
UKRAINE. Anatolij Rafailovic BRUSILOVSKIJ (b. 1932) The Japanese Zodiac, Net, The Rat, circa 1979. Ink drawing, mixed media, approx. 65 x 90 cm. Signed lower right. Stamped by the artist and titled on verso. Brusilowski was one of a group of avant-garde protest artists who, in 1974, staged an exhibition in a Moscow market in defiance of the Communist regime of the time. This wild exhibition was immediately shut down by the police, the works confiscated or destroyed and the artists arrested. But the event had worldwide repercussions. It became known as the "Bulldozer" exhibition, in reference to the way it was brought to an end. In the aftermath, the Russian collector Alexandre Gleser managed to collect a number of works by these dissidents and obtained the right from the authorities to expatriate to France, taking his collection with him. He settled in a small village in Essonne, where the current owner met him and was able to acquire a number of works, including the one presented here.
