Alphonse POITEVIN (1819-1882). The Louvre,... - Lot 73 - Marie-Saint Germain
Alphonse POITEVIN (1819-1882). The Louvre, Sully Pavilion, Paris, circa 1855.Unmounted photolithograph, 28.5 x 22 cm.Handwritten note on back: "Photographie provenant de mon grand père Alphonse Poitevin faite par lui d'après ses procédés et offert par son petit fils Jean Poitevin à Lisette Baudet le 3 septembre 1933". Louis-Alphonse Poitevin, French chemical engineer and photographer, is rightly considered by his peers to be the third man in photography, on a par with Niépce and Daguerre. He invented a number of photographic processes, including photolithography, the first image-reproducing process, the cyanotype, unalterable charcoal photography and a color printing process using fatty inks.
