MALE. Portrait of Karl-Maria KERBENY, ca. 1860. Vintage print on albumen paper, business card size, 9 x 6 cm. Mention of the photographer on the back: Vuagnat, peintre, photographe, Genève. Dedicated by Kerbeny on the front at the bottom and dated 1862 in blue pencil on the back. Kerbeny (1824-1882) was a journalist, writer, translator and human rights activist. He is considered the first person to use the words "homosexual" and "homosexuality". Throughout his life, this pioneer fought for the acceptance of homosexuality as a natural state and not a disease. Krafft-Ebing was influenced by his writings and used his vocabulary in his major work, Psychopathia Sexualis. Provenance: Tony Fekete Library.
