[32 sketches & ink drawings by marcel vertès] Pierre LOUŸS - Marcel VERTÈS. The Adventures of King Pausole. At the expense of an amateur, Paris, 1930. Fort in-4 of 489 pages, in sheets, filled cover, strong box with its half-velin folder and spine with title in gold (binding of the time). Spine soiled. Illustrated with 74 original hors-texte drypoints by Marcel Vertès (1895-1961), a suite of 74 etchings with remarks and the suite of 15 refused plates. Copy enriched with 32 original drawings of which one is signed in pencil. Edition strictly limited to 99 numbered copies on vellum of the Arches paper mills watermarked "PAUSOLE ET VERTÈS". Blessed period of the Thirties, when it was possible - provided one was a well-informed bibliophile - to receive, printed in one's name, a copy of the Adventures of King Pausole, with a free suite of original drypoints, declared but refused, whose quality and freedom of tone have nothing to envy to the world of clandestine bibliophily. With the original copper enclosed, the set must weigh about five kilos, five kilos of happiness where "every evening, a new face, and yet known, approved, perhaps even regretted for a year, came to put on the cushions of the cheeks that a long desire made very precious". By their undeniable professional qualities, the craftsmen of the workshops of "La Tradition" allowed the great Vertès to realize a masterpiece surpassing the talent expressed by his illustrations that we commonly find under a pen, anonymous but identifiable, within the underground market.
