Jean GALMOT (1879-1928), Member of Parliament for French Gui - Lot 277
Jean GALMOT (1879-1928), Member of Parliament for French Guiana. Autograph letter signed, January 1928. 2 sheets in blue ink, 26.5 x 21 cm. Letter to a friend about her son who has gone mad, sent from Gironde. Inspired by Galmot's life, Blaise Cendrars (1887-1961) published a report in the weekly Vu, edited by Lucien Vogel, between October 8 and December 17, 1930. This serial was published in full under the title Rhum, L'Aventure de Jean Galmot, by Grasset in 1930. L'Affaire Galmot, Rhum is a fictionalized life of Jean Galmot, in which he is accused of speculating in the 1919 rum affair. It portrays a man who, like Galmot, was idealistic and freedom-loving, and compares him to Don Quixote. The reality of the character was undoubtedly more complex. Historically, Galmot was one of the great defenders of the black cause, alongside Marcus Garvey. Before Rhum, Galmot had already inspired two stories by Louis Chadourne, who was his secretary: Terre de Chanaan (1921) and Le Pot au noir (1922).
