TIMOR, ATONI ETHNIC GROUP. Mountain fossil coral ancestor mask, 23 x 18 cm, mounted on a 12 cm metal base. Atoni masks follow a very minimalist aesthetic canon: the eyes are two hollowed-out circles set high on the face, the mouth is small, the nose is short, as is the forehead, which is slightly rounded. They were intended to be placed on the face of the deceased during funeral ceremonies, or to be placed at the entrance of houses to protect them.
