Engraving depicting the battle of Cabañas between the Spanish fleet and the Dutch attackers on the outskirts of Havana. In 1638, just as Admiral Carlos de Ibarra y Barresi was about to begin his return voyage from Cartagena de Indias , he was informed that an armada of ten reinforced galleons had left Holland with no mission other than to leave troops and ammunition in Brazil, to join another Dutch squadron of fourteen ships that sailed through Havana in a joint attempt to capture the Spanish ships. Despite orders to avoid his rivals, he entered the battle, and won with a master stroke. This episode of the Eighty Years' War, made famous by the involvement of Dutch East India Company admiral Cornelis Corneliszoon Jol (1597-1641), a privateer nicknamed "El Pirata" or "Leg of Wood", allowed Carlos de Ibarra to be awarded the title of Viscount of Centenera, Marquis of Taracena, Commander of Villahermosa in the Order of Santiago, Knight of the Order of Alcántara and Gentleman of the Council of War. 28 x 37 cm
