John CLELAND. Memoirs of Fanny Hill. Privately... - Lot 307 - Marie-Saint Germain
John CLELAND. Memoirs of Fanny Hill. Privately printed, The Kamashastra Society, London, 1907. In-4 of 287 pages, red half-chagrin with corners, spine with ornamented nerves, gilt head, natural edges (binding of the time). Illustrated with 12 hors-texte etchings after drawings by Paul Avril. This is the first edition of the Kamashastra, printed on fine paper. "A true reprint of the rare 1749 edition." The Kama Shastra Society, founded by Sir Richard Burton and his partner, Forster Fitzgerald Arbuthnot, around 1882, was touted as a secret, educational society. This society published numerous written works, largely of erotic but scholarly content, of Eastern origin, including a translation of the Kama Sutra. Their goal was to "remove the scales from the eyes of the English".
