VERY RARE SUITE OF MARCEL VERTÈS. Free suite... - Lot 217 - Marie-Saint Germain
VERY RARE SUITE OF MARCEL VERTÈS. Free suite of 15 plates, published at the author's expense. It is not a matter of a few scattered plates of L'Heure exquise or Le Pays à mon goût. These plates can be found among the two other series of etchings published by Vertès, but the titles of most of the plates have been modified by the author's hand. Title of the 15 plates : 1. temptation of St Antoine. 2. Macabre Pipi. 3. The Baton of old age, that is to say the Blind man of The Exquisite Hour. 4. Henri VIII. 5.La Revue, or La Présentation du Pays à mon goût. 6. Printemps. 7. La Morue. 8. La Sale Bête, or Cochon de chien from du Pays à mon goût. 9. L'Institutrice. 10. Springtime. 11. La Comparaison, or Quelle heure est-il ? from L'Heure exquise . 12. Silence, or Rêve familier from Pays à mon goût. I3. The Shadow. 14. La Fermière or Les Vaches de L'Heure Exquise. 15. Le Repos à la campagne, or Dimanche du Pays à mon goût. All the etchings are titled and signed by the artist's hand. According to Dutel who has not seen this suite, the plates of the Heure Exquise were "published in 1920 probably in Vienna". It must be the same for these ones. The 15 drypoints are printed on an imitation Japan paper and are numbered and signed in pencil by Vertès. Not to be confused, either, with the plates removed in heliogravure for the portfolio titled Entrée Interdite au Public. Not cited by Dutel, not in the Enfer de la BnF.
