Félicien ROPS - Henry MONNIER. Les Bas-fonds de la société. Jules Claye, Paris, 1862. Large in-8 of xii, 267 and 8 pages, ivory vellum, spine decorated with gilded fillets, the same repeated 3 times framing the plates, with in the center of each of them a small angel bending over a vit, all gilded, and enhanced in colors, a gilded figure on the spine, with in its center a crowned vit and its two faithful companions, all gilded and also enhanced in colors. Missing the corner of page 97, without loss of text. Illustrated by Félicien Rops with a frontispiece repeated here in two very different states, one on China paper, final state, another on laid paper, presenting several differences. Flight of birds, the view of Paris, the woman sitting on the edge of the well. Printed at 200 numbered copies on laid paper not put in the market. Illustrated with the frontispiece by Félicien Rops, engraved for the Poulet-Malassis edition, published in 1863 in Brussels. Ironic autograph address: "To Mademoiselle Prudhomme, the prudent man keeps silent when he has too much to say. Henry Monnier." The work was condemned to destruction for contempt of public morality by the correctional court of the Seine, in 1865.
