Beautiful silver plate representing the ecstasy of St. Ignat - Lot 94
Beautiful silver plate representing the ecstasy of St. Ignatius after the work of Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) for the altar of the Jesuit church in Brussels, now preserved at Warwick Castle. The saint holds in his right hand the Bible with the motto of St. Ignatius "Ad Maiorem dei gloriam", his left hand in a supplicant position, his face in a position of supplicant, his face, haloed, turned upwards, where is a solar IHS. Bears the trace of a punch. Repunched with a swan. Work of Flanders, 17th century. 14,3 x 11 cm Weight : 75 gr The realization of such a silver plate with a realistic profile of the founder of the Jesuits, coincides with the strong influence of this saint, canonized on 12 March 1622, throughout Europe. Our silver plate is based on a study by Peter Paul Rubens, which was widely used in engravings, notably by Schelte Adams Bolswert (1586-1659). An engraving taken from "The Portrait Gallery" Vol. VII by Charles Knight (London, 1837), is inspired by this painting and and is kept in the British museum.
