Emmanuel FAY (died 1923). Vintage silver... - Lot 363 - Marie-Saint Germain
Emmanuel FAY (died 1923). Vintage silver print, 25,5 x 18 cm. "Speaking of drawings, last week at an old lady's house, I was marveling at a small orientalist painting, finely realized. "It is Emmanuel Faÿ who painted it", she told me. This musician and painter, brother of Bernard Faÿ, committed suicide in New York in 1923. According to my hostess, the cause of his suicide was the mad love (unrequited) he felt for Cocteau. Not much is known about Emmanuel Faÿ, now completely forgotten. In a radio interview, Soupault recounts that he received a letter from Emmanuel Faÿ from New York in which he wrote: "How can one live in a world where everyone cheats?" Another version of this quote can be found in Gide's Journal: "One does not have the heart to play in a world where everyone cheats." As for Claude Arnaud, Cocteau's biographer, he writes that Emmanuel Faÿ let himself die a few days before Radiguet's death... Who is this mysterious young man whose face can be seen on a famous photo of the Dada group?" http://rigaut.blogspot.com/2006/01/un-monde-de-tricheurs.html. Provenance: Marc Allegret Archives.
