Lev Vassilyevich ZACK known as Leon ZACK... - Lot 286 - Marie-Saint Germain
Lev Vassilyevich ZACK known as Leon ZACK (1892 - 1980) Portrait of Janine Charrat Painted around 1945 Oil on canvas Signed lower right "Léon Zack 55 x 46 cm Provenance : Formerly private collection, Paris Private collection, Grenoble Bibliography : The work is reproduced in the catalogue of the painted work established by Florent and Irène Zack and published in Pierre Cabanne's book, Léon Zack, Paris, Les éditions de l'amateur, 1993, p. 78, n. 185, reference 2572. Léon Zack, known for his lyrical abstraction and his evanescent colours, was an eminent portrait painter of a classical style inspired by symbolist inspiration. This portrait from the hours of exile, when the painter had to leave occupied Paris, was executed in Grenoble where the ballerina Janine Charrat. The dancer and choreographer, who was close to Lifar, inspired the artist to create a work in a cubist style in which the influence of his friend Picasso can be felt. During the 1940s Léon Zack leaned towards abstraction, which for him was a liberation that allowed him to express his "inner experience". The work can be compared, in terms of its construction, to the Virgin and Child of 1946 (number 183 in the Catalogue) with its frontal position, its architecture of triangles and its geometric "asceticism".
