James PERRY. An Epistle from Mademoiselle... - Lot 424 - Marie-Saint Germain
James PERRY. An Epistle from Mademoiselle d'Eon to the Right Honorable L[or]d M[ansfiel]D, L[or]d C[he]F J[ustic]E of the C[our]T of K[in]G's B--H, on the determination in regard to her sex. M Smith, London, 1778. Booklet in-8 of v-ix, [2], xii, [1] and 2-27 pages. The name obscured in the title refers to Lord Mansfield, Chief Justice of the Court of King's Bench. James Perry was a journalist for 'The General Advertiser' and 'London Evening Post' before setting up his own magazine 'The European Magazine'. The poem claims to be by the Chevalier d'Éon, a diplomat, spy and freemason whose androgynous physical characteristics have been the subject of much debate since the 18th century. D'Éon lived publicly as a man for 49 years, although during that time he managed to infiltrate the court of Empress Elizabeth of Russia by posing as a woman. Then, in the latter part of his life, he chose to live as a woman. This poem, told from Eon's point of view, is addressed to Lord Mansfield (William Murray) about his "determination with regard to his sex."
