CURIOSA. Georges BATAILLE - Hans BELLMER. Madame Edwarda. Paris, Georges Visat [1965]. In-folio, 38 x 24,5 cm, old rose calf, large erotic composition across the boards, representing a woman's buttocks and sex, in fawn and black calf and black reptile skin mosaic in relief, long mute spine, gilt head, untrimmed, pearl grey velvet lining and endpapers, cover and spine preserved, half rose calf striped folder with gilt title and slipcase, spine of folder faded (Honegger, 1986). First illustrated edition, with 12 copper engravings by Hans Bellmer, including the frontispiece and a vignette at the colophon, all signed in pencil by Bellmer. Limited edition of 167 copies. According to the editor of Éros invaincu: "Bellmer's remarkable images are drawn with the sharpness of a scalpel. They crystallize, surpass and breathe Bataille's text, whose realism is due to its lyrical brilliance rather than its precision of detail. It is this very difference in approach, this unique vision, that makes the artist the equal of the author, rather than a mere illustrator. "Enclosed: a letter concerning the copy "Sender: Monique Nordmann, Route de Pressy 17 CH - 1253 Vandoeuvres - Geneva 24 September 2001. Addressee: Mr Tobia Bezzola - Kunsthaus, Zurich ; Dear Sir, In addition to the documents sent by fax on 21 October, I am sending you an extract concerning Madame Edwarda: Madame Edwarda, by Georges Bataille. This luxury edition of one of Bataille's most beautiful texts is illustrated with twelve copperplates engraved with point and burin by Hans Bellmer, one of the greatest artists of our time. The copperplates engraved in 1955 are of a very high quality, the graphics are intense, deep, rigorous in the irrational, to the point of normalizing it. One of the most important illustrations. "Unconquered Eros 102, Pia, 852. Provenance: Ex-libris Gérard Nordmann, n° 46, Christie's sale, 27 April 2006.
