Théophile GAUTIER (1811-1872)] Théophile... - Lot 359 - Marie-Saint Germain
Théophile GAUTIER (1811-1872)] Théophile G...... Letter to the President (Trip to Italy). 1850 [1890]. In-8 of 40 pages and 1 ff. of completion of printing, cover printed in black, red half-maroquin, spine ribbed, natural edges (modern binding). First edition. Printed on Japon impérial and bears the mention : " Completed for printing in very small numbers for a few curious people at the Château de la Misère, the year 10008008010 ". Illustrated with an etched frontispiece printed on Chine or Japon. According to Dutel: "There is an engraving by Félicien Rops, entitled La Présidente, prior to the one placed in the frontispiece of this edition. Like many famous writers and artists, Gautier went every Sunday evening to the apartment in the rue Frochot, where Mme Sabatier, known as La Présidente, following the custom of the salons, gathered the Parisian elite of the arts and letters. It was known that she was not a prude, and was not very upset by the salacious remarks of the male population. Théophile Gautier, more or less in love, wanted to do more, by writing her this obscene letter during his trip to Italy in 1850. The President laughed at it and circulated the prose. This edition, published in Paris, does not bear the name of Auguste Vacquerie (1819-1895), as it appears as a token of authenticity in the following editions. This romantic poet waited until the death of the President in January 1890 to publish it "in a very small number for a few curious people at the Château de la Misère". Provenance: ex-libris Jean Jacobs. Perceau 95-1, only cited as "extremely rare", Pia 717, Dutel 455.
