In the style of Tomi UNGERER (1931-2019).... - Lot 199 - Marie-Saint Germain
In the style of Tomi UNGERER (1931-2019). Intimacies, circa 1980. 4 pencil drawings, 26,5 x 33 cm. Unsigned. 3 drawings have coloured highlights. "Tomi Ungerer is a French illustrator known for his drawings for children's books and his spiritual and secular illustrations for adults. In 2013, he was the focus of Brad Bernstein's 2012 documentary The Striking Spirit, in which illustrator and author Maurice Sendak described him as "on the cusp of something extraordinary. It's disarming and funny. And not respectable at all". Born on November 28, 1931 in Strasbourg, France, he moved to New York in 1956 and published his first children's book The Mellops Go Flying (1957). He began working for magazines such as Life and the New York Times. In the early 1970s, he was blacklisted for not following the new Supreme Court guidelines for erotica. Nevertheless, he received the Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 1998 for his contribution to children's literature and in 2007 the Tomi Ungerer Museum opened in Strasbourg. He moved to Nova Scotia in Canada in 1971 with his wife Yvonne. They live between Ireland and Strasbourg." Artnet.
