CURIOSA [Milivoy UZELAC]. Trees of life,... - Lot 49 - Marie-Saint Germain
CURIOSA [Milivoy UZELAC]. Trees of life, circa 1920. 5 numbered engravings, one monogrammed S+, bound by a cord, covered surface 9.5 x 15 cm or 15 x 9.5 cm, and 31 x 23 cm the sheet. Originally from Mostar, today in Herzegovina, the Croatian part of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Uzelac (1897-1977) began his artistic career in Prague in 1915, in the studio of the painter Jan Preisler, while attending classes at the Academy. In 1921, he spent the first part of the year in Paris, in the Montparnasse district, then settled permanently in France two years later. During his Prague-Zagreb years - until 1923 - Uzelac's work reflects the spirit of war-torn Austria-Hungary. From 1918 onwards, eroticism plays an important role in his work. Although he lived most of his life in France, Uzelac continued to maintain links with the Croatian art scene, exhibiting in Zagreb and other places in the former Yugoslavia until the end of his life. In 2002, Croatian Post issued a stamp featuring his work "Girl in a Boat". The works preceding his Parisian life are particularly rare.
