Alex SZEKELY. Domina Mea, 10 Blätter von Al, Wien, 1935. 11 - Lot 213
Alex SZEKELY. Domina Mea, 10 Blätter von Al, Wien, 1935. 11 pencil drawings, 29 x 23 cm. Few things have come down to us about Alexander Székely (1901-1968), says Alex Székely, except that he lived between Budapest, Paris and Vienna. In the Austrian capital, he made a career as a cartoonist in cabarets such as Der Liebe Augustin, inaugurated by Stella Kadmon in 1931, or the A.B.C., directed by Hans Margulies, between 1934 and 1937. There he excelled in reproducing his portraits in a few quick strokes. It is between 1939 and 1964, that he realizes "under the coat" his portfolios made up of original drawings executed in ink, charcoal or watercolour, that he signs AS as well as Al. and captions sometimes in German language. Outside the underground world, he illustrates Voltaire's Candide and the texts of Ovid, François Villon, Verlaine, and Edgar Poe.
