CUBA. Enrique MENESES (1929-2013). Sierra Maestra, Cuba, Dec - Lot 355
CUBA. Enrique MENESES (1929-2013). Sierra Maestra, Cuba, December 1957 to April 1958. Silver print, 21 x 30 cm. Annotations on verso. Small tear at bottom. Spanish journalist, photographer, writer and filmmaker, Meneses is best known for this 1958 photo essay for Paris Match, devoted to Fidel Castro, Che Guevara and the Cuban revolution. His photos cover several months of fighting in the hills against Batista, eight months before Castro's victory on January 1, 1959. In the foreground, the Catalan Suynor takes a nap in his hammock, alongside his companions, after a twelve-hour march through the Sierra Maestra. From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Castro's three groups were unable to rest, eating only two meals a day: breakfast and dinner.
