November 1788. Family correspondence evoking the pregnancy of his cousin in Languedoc; he details all his names and titles as well as those of his wife née de Cauchon de Maupas, for the christening of the child of which the Marquis d'Audiffret will be godfather; mention of an affair involving the Duc d'Orléans and another mentioning Payan. August 1802. He informs him of the end of his captivity. It was five weeks ago, my dear d'Audiffret, that the order arrived to have me translated by the Gendarmerie, from the Tour du Temple where I had been cloistered for 30 months (which completed my 9 years of uninterrupted captivity) to the Isle of Elba, where I was to remain indefinitely under surveillance. I would probably have spent 3 or 4 months on the move, sleeping every night in damp, unhealthy dungeons (...). I was ready to leave when, on August 15, the day of the 1st Consul's birthday, a hand that had become a friend [Joséphine de Beauharnais], obtained a promise from the Head of State that I would remain in Paris (...). Details of his release and police surveillance. June 1804 (...) Her Majesty the Empress, the providence that Heaven has given us to console us, help us and make us forget the evils we have suffered since 1789, has kindly received my wife, my 4-year-old daughter and myself. She has showered us with kindness (...). He has the promise of being employed and will be received at the Château de St-Cloud. Geneva, messidor year XII. Relating to his employment as inspector of weights and measures in the departments of Léman, Jura, Ain, Montblanc and Doubs, which Empress Joséphine obtained for him and of which he speaks warmly.
