Joan CARDONA (1877-1958). At the Café-Concert,... - Lot 287 - Marie-Saint Germain
Joan CARDONA (1877-1958). At the Café-Concert, circa 1900. Gouache and pencil drawing, 43 x 30 cm. There is a parallel to be drawn between Joan Cardona and Pablo Picasso. Both were born in Barcelona and moved to Paris at the same time, beginning their careers by collaborating with French illustrated periodicals such as Le Rire and Le Frou-frou. Cardona was noticed for his drawings published in L'Assiette au beurre (number 307 of 1907). As a young artist, he trained as a painter at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Saint Ferdinand (Madrid), where he exhibited from 1895. He then moved to Paris. In 1898 he illustrated La Femme et le pantin, a novel by Pierre Louÿs, and settled permanently in the French capital between 1907 and 1914. He produced several lithographed posters, including one for the Ramble cycles, printed by Chaix in 1901, and another for Byrrh quinquina. He exhibited regularly in Parisian salons until 1933 (Salon des humoristes, Salon d'automne). In March 1918, a retrospective exhibition was held at the Salon Parès in Barcelona.
