INDIA. Shiva lingam stone, Narmada Bana lingam... - Lot 4 - Marie-Saint Germain
INDIA. Shiva lingam stone, Narmada Bana lingam or Narmadesh Tantric Shivalingam, 15.5 x 9.5 cm. Grey stone with a red stone inclusion, female symbol in the form of a mouth. The lingams of India are symbols of the Hindu god Shiva. They stand vertically in the middle of each temple dedicated to the god. They are worshipped by Hindu priests. The actual lingam of Shiva is made of gray stone (male phallic symbol) with a red smile inclusion upwards (female symbol). "The Narmada Bana lingam or Narmadesh Tantric Shivalingam, is formed by a single block mineral stone with a perfect oval shape. In the ancient Vedic texts of Hinduism, the archetype is shaped like an egg. The lingam archetype is an aspect of the cosmic egg. The natural red flames on the surface represent feminine energy. Its egg shape represents that which has no beginning and no end and merges into infinity. These lingams originate from the Narmada River, 450 kilometers north of Mumbay, one of the holy pilgrimage sites in India. The stones are believed to have come from a meteorite that fell in the area 14 million years ago, and are made of rock crystal, crystallized quartz, chalcedony, basalt and agate. By rolling in the river the stones get in a natural way their oval shape (from the analogy with the cosmic egg). They are polished by hand with clarified butter (ghee).
