Virgin and Child in boxwood carved in the... - Lot 15 - Marie-Saint Germain
Virgin and Child in boxwood carved in the round. Seated on a bench, Mary is holding her Son on her left knee, which is turned to the side. She is dressed in a girdled dress and a cloak, one side of which is folded in front of her, forming beak-like folds. The child holds a sphere in his left hand. Ile-de-France, circa 1340 H. 18.5 cm (visible missing parts including the left arm of the Virgin and the Child) The position of the Child, who is detached from the natural protection of his mother, arouses the interest of the spectator. Two ivory models are known with a position of the Child evoking the same feelings. One is in the Thomson Collection (Art Gallery of Ontario) and the other in the in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Book consulted: Medieval Ivories and Works of Art, The Thomson Collection at the Art Gallery of Ontario, The Thomson Collection edition, pp 55-55
